The Education Department of Sindh from pre-partition to post partition era was looked after by an officer called the Director Public Instructions with headquarter at Karachi. In 1955, the post of Director Public Instructions was re-designated as Director of Education Karachi. In 1962, a separate Directorate of Education for Hyderabad region was established. Again in 1972, at the time of Nationalization of private Educational Institutions, the Directorate of Education was divided into the Directorate of College Education and the Directorate of School Education.
There are about 270 (Male & Female) colleges in the province of Sindh and are divided into five regions, that is Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Mirpurkas and Larkana.The region wise distribution of colleges is as under:
There have been changes in the nomenclature of the directorate of college education in Sindh. From 1972 to 13-08-2001; the head of office was called the Director of Colleges Education; and then from 14-08-2001 to 30-06-2006, the colleges were looked after by the District Officer Education (Colleges) Karachi. The colleges were functioning under the administrative control of the District Government Karachi. In 2006, the administrative control of colleges was transferred from District Government to Government of Sindh. An officer of BPS-19 was posted as Regional Director (Colleges), subsequently in 2011, the post of Regional Director was upgraded, and an officer of BPS-20 was posted as the Director College Education, Karachi Region, Karachi.
The Director of College Education is a Controlling Officer, who looks after administrative affairs of the colleges of his region and is an intermediate link between the colleges and the Government of Sindh through the Director General (Colleges) Sindh.
Prof: Inam Ahmed, an officer of BPS-20 has taken-over the charge of the office of Director College Education, Karachi Region, Karachi on 14th May, 2013.
The working of this Directorate has been divided into three sections, namely, Human Resource Section, Finance Section and Inspection Section. The Head of each section is an Additional Director of BPS-19, who supervises the working of his subordinate Deputy Director, Assistant Director, Superintendent and other clerical staff, specified as under:

- Pension/ Gratuity & G. P. Funds etc.
- Matters pertaining to A.G. Sindh and Finance Department.
- All utilities matters, i.e., Electricity, Sui Southern Gas Telephone etc.
3. Inspection & Planning Section.
- Inspection, construction, renovation/maintenance work of Colleges.
- Planning of new schemes, new SNE proposals, trainings and scholarships.
- Academic affairs, co-curricular activities and different activities in Colleges.
- Court/ Ombudsman cases and Assembly Questions.
